The longest month
As many have noted before me, February certainly feels like the longest month, but here it is more than half gone already. I really meant to blog last Monday, but I can't even remember now why I didn't. Just life, I guess.
Anyway, here is a picture I took for that post that never happened.

These were the things I was working on at the time. The never-ending grey Cobblestone pullover for my son (DK Peace Fleece on 3.5 mm needles), a very orange Corrugator to take a break from the grey stockinette, and one finished photographer mitt for my brother.
It was finished before that football game of which we will not speak, and I had a chance to take it over to the viewing location and get him to try it on. I was quite surprised when he said it fit "perfectly". That drawing and measuring stuff really can work! Read on...

Since it was intended as a birthday present for Feb. 10, I had taken pretty good notes up to a point, that point being the end of the thumb gusset. "On next rnd put thumb stitches on a piece of yarn & cast on one over gap. Work in stockinette st until" and that's all she wrote. Sigh. So there was some significant reverse engineering to do for the second mitt, but in the end they seemed to match up pretty well. These would actually be a quick knit if one had the pattern written down in advance of starting. The second mitten was knit in one day even with all the extra figuring. Hurray for Blue Face Aran!

My apologies for the smudge at the upper left. It took me a while to realize there was crud on the lens, so there may be more smudgy pics.
In addition to the obvious one, these mittens have another cool dexterity-enhancing feature.
It's not visible here. This is the back of the right mitten.
But if you flip it over to the palm side and look carefully at the index finger you find...
a little opening.
It is made like a pocket, but with the lining not stitched down so that
the index finger can poke out at the tip when needed, but is fully
covered by the little flap (here shown flipped out) when retracted. I got the idea from the mittens Ruth made. Thanks Ruth! Here is the in-action sequence shot by Youngest Child while I was busy eating cake.

Did someone say cake? Yes! It was a double birthday celebration for big brother Norm (53!) and my middle child, Leba (18!) Check out the awesome cake and candles.

(Someone watches a lot of The Shopping Channel.)
Happy Birthday sweetheart! And one last picture... Ben's hat and scarf. Mmm. Baby alpaca AND cashmere. Why yes, that is a Corrugator.

What a great project report. I think your mitts are so clever!! A very pretty yarn you are using to brighten up the season.
A post well worth waiting for. I love flip top mittens, and your glove is a pretty cool mod of that.
The corrugator is eye-searing. Which I suppose is the point for young Ben, and the Februariness of it all.
I quite like the vibrant orange. It is a lift to the spirit this very long feburary.
Ok, as a photographer, I MUST MAKE THOSE MITTS! Ahem. Sorry, I seem to have lost my cool.
Think you could offer a quick run through of the method? Maybe? My Dad needs some too methinks. :)(Ok, so yes, I could figure them out myself, but...)
Very cool mitts, finger flap and all! Also, love the colour in Ben's Corrugator. And also again, I agree totally about February.
What fabulous mitts! You're such a clever woman :^)
Happy belated Birthday to Norm and Leba and yes, that is one very fun and fancy BD cake!
It's good seeing Ben with hat and scarf on, great Corrugator and that hat is Gorgeous!
That orange is like a very bright patch of sunshine!
