The Loot

| | Comments (5)

Well, the weather today was cold, grey, and raining. All day. So the Rhinebeck loot photos had to be taken on the corner of my desk, near the window and what little daylight there was. Anyway, I think I was pretty restrained in my acquisitions. Everything I bought fit into one shopping bag with room to spare. See?

What? You want a better look? Okay ...

My first purchase was this:

This box o' fluff contains 24 lovely little puffs of plant dyed wool fiber. It is from Sunbridge College Craft Studio. It came with two felting needles too. You can just barely see them there, taped to the inside of the box lid.

Next, I bought this:

It's a Golding, 3 inch solid zebrawood whorl, 2.2 oz. No, it didn't come with yarn attached. I had to overnight in Utica on my way home and since I was alone in a motel with spindle and fibre, well one thing led to another. You know - spinning, plying, and more spinning. Because I really thought that I should test drive the other spindle too.

It's a pretty little Bosworth spindle, a 24 g (.84 oz) mini. The whorl is made of bocote.

And if someone tells you that Sheila Bosworth can teach you to spin in 30 seconds? It's true.

Unfortunately this little lovely won't be staying with me as I bought it for my Spinning Roving Swap pal. She will also be getting some of this fibre from the Spinners Hill Shop (website under construction):

It feels wonderful and I have a couple of ounces for myself too, after I've had a bit more practice with the BFL that I got in the swap.

Last photo:

Folk Socks by Nancy Bush and a multi-needle holder for felting needles. I also bought a very nice little book about needle felting, but my sister-in-law has borrowed it to show to her students this week. I'll post the particulars when I get it back.

That's it, that's all. And it was enough. I just made the $200 personal exemption limit that Canada Border Services allows for the length of time I was out of the country. But really, for me Rhinebeck was all about being with my people, meeting my invisible (but not imaginary) friends. Thanks everyone. I look forward to doing it again. Only 6 months until MSW?

I can't respond through blogger cause they won't let me see you're email so here I am. Great Spindles by the way. I'm almost addicted to buying them.
Anyway, I am planning on a dye workshop in the spring and I'm going to call it something about eggs or easter or something because we'll use easter egg dyes, koolaid and anything else that is kitchen safe. Then in the fall I think I' going to work on something about natural dyes or acid dyes. I need to get on the ball and plan all of this. This past week has just been focused on organizing the store and getting the word out. Definitely come and see me. Are you in Toronto?

It was great to meet you and see your fabulous knitting. I'm so happy to have been able to aid and abet you into the 'darkside' of spinning. Keep practicing! Your spinning looks great so far!

Y'know, I went to my very first fiber fest last month, a little (but wonderful!) local gathering. It merely whetted my appetite for something greater. I so envy your trip to Rhinebeck this year! I don't think I can wait for Rhinebeck 2007; I want to go to MS&W in May, too. Maybe we can figure out a way to drive together? Pick up a few more knitters along the way? Who knows...it could be fun!
